Competitor Adyen vs PayPal vs Stripe

The three-way contest for global digital payments. (Stripe is private, not held, but is the key rival to both fund holdings.)

The Three#

| | Adyen | PayPal (Braintree) | Stripe (not held) | |, -|, -|, -|, -| | Sweet spot | Large global enterprise | Consumer wallet + unbranded | Developers + platforms/startups | | Strength | Single global platform, profitability | Network + Venmo + scale | Developer UX, embedded/platforms | | Weakness | Less developer/SMB | Branded-checkout erosion | Take-rate pressure at scale |

The Battleground: Platforms / Embedded Payments#

The fastest-growing arena is embedded payments for software platforms + marketplaces, where Stripe is strong + Adyen is investing aggressively ("Adyen for Platforms"). This is the key contested growth vector.

Fund Implication#

Adyen must prove it can win platforms/embedded vs Stripe; PayPal must defend branded checkout + monetise Venmo. The fund owns the two public payment leaders + accepts Stripe as the private competitive overhang. The secular tailwind (cash → digital) is large enough for multiple winners. → Adyen, PayPal, Digital Payments.
